Death of his father on 6th October.

He goes to Christ&#;s Hospital School in London and meets his lifelong friend Charles Lamb.

He enters Jesus College, Cambridge.

On 2nd December he enlists in the 15th Light Dragoons as Silas Tomkyn Comberbache.

He returns to Cambridge after being bought out of the army by his disgusted brothers.
